Identity Bureau: Legal Identity for Trees

FoAM and Z33 co-organise a two-day workshop lead by Heath Bunting and An Mertens and linked to Heath's work Identity4You, presented at Mind the System, Find the Gap exhibition at Z33. The workshop takes place at FoAM in Brussels.

During this workshop you learn how you can create a legal identity for trees. With your guardianship they will be able to gain a voice in society, first ficticiously, but who knows, maybe in the long run they will be able to vote legally. Bunting demonstrates that identity can be constructed in time by placing an 'individual' inside the web of mobile phones, loyalty cards, bank accounts, administrative correspondency and other person related data. Identity Bureau questions the notion of personality by showing how an identity is constructed largely by material issues. Mertens is active as an artist, storyteller and writer. For this workshop she brings up the question what new perspectives a legal identity for trees can add to our personal and social landscape. Mertens guides the participants in the discovery of the identity of the tree they chose to guard.
